Next came a session covering using the stick as a striking weapon and for takedowns and sword movements that can be used to improve joint mobility. Also there was a session of defence against stick that involved in group slow sparring. Everyone appreciate how the movements with the stick and sword improved the relaxation and mobility of the body.
This was then followed by knife defence and throwing. During this lesson students had to split into to groups. One had to get from one side of the wood to the other and the other had to stop them using knives.
After lunch the group learnt to work against grabs. During the demonstration of this work Paul used Ed, an experienced MMA fighter, to show how relaxed movement and form work against fast, strong attacks.
The group was then split to allow one group to work on empty hand skills and massage techniques, whilst the other group practiced movement drills using airsoft pistols. This proved popular with the students who practiced rolling and moving with a pistol before moving onto a short airsoft competition.
After tea there was a chance to sit around a bonfire and discuss the legal implications of self defence and how the training had progressed throughout the weekend.
On Sunday students awoke to another exercise session where the emphasis was on rolling and team drills. This was followed by a lesson on working in and around vehicles. This is an area that is difficult to study in regular classes. With their cars parked on a large car park students learnt the basics of entering and exiting vehicles before moving onto the more advanced skills of defence against knife, gun and garrotte whilst sat in the drivers seat. The lesson was then culminated with a practical demonstration of methods used to remove people from cars.
Having had lunch and taken the time to clean the venue prior to departure everyone met up for a session of massage. Refreshed students then discussed their experiences and received attendance certificates.
Everyone had a fantastic time on this weekend and there will be similar future events. For a taste of the work from the course click here to view a clip.
